States that Allow Anonymous Lottery Winners

How can you become an anonymous lottery Powerball winner? If you thought winning the Powerball lottery was difficult, try remaining anonymous!

While it may be difficult to remain anonymous if you win the Powerball lottery, it’s not impossible.

But first, why would you want to remain anonymous? Why not raise the big cardboard check high in the air for millions of people on TV to see? If you’ve always wanted to be in the spotlight, this could certainly be your opportunity. Reporters — especially if you won a large Powerball lottery — will come far and wide to snap your photo and interview you. They will shower you with praise and congratulations and will want to learn all about you and how you’ll use the money? For some, this part of winning the Powerball lottery can be as much fun and as exciting as winning itself. But for most, this part of winning the lottery can be scary and cause anxiety (Related: Why Lottery Winners Crash After A Big Win).

There are many reasons why you may want to remain anonymous after winning the Powerball lottery that I will write about in much greater detail in another post, but for now, I’ll just say that when you have a lot of assets, you can become a target for lawsuits, harassment, and requests for money — from family, friends, and often complete strangers!

The Multi-State Lottery Association, which runs the Powerball Lottery, explicitly states that if you purchase a winning lottery ticket in the following states, you have the legal right to remain anonymous:

  1. Arizona (AZ)
  2. Delaware (DE)
  3. Georgia (GA)
  4. Kansas (KS)
  5. Maryland (MD)
  6. New Jersey (NJ)
  7. North Dakota (ND)
  8. Ohio (OH)
  9. South Carolina (SC)
  10. Virginia (VA)
  11. Texas (TX)

But what happens if you want to be an anonymous lottery winner and you didn’t purchase the winning lottery ticket in one of these states? It makes the job harder, but there are strategies and legal entities you can create that will help. I’ll share some of these ideas and techniques in another post.
