Lately I’ve been reading and watching a lot of World War II documentaries (Netflix has a series called WWII In Color that is excellent). The more I learn about that war and the other wars our soldiers have fought in the more I understand and appreciate this holiday.
I used to think about it as a day for fireworks and BBQs and to celebrate what people did a couple of hundred years ago, but now I understand that our freedom is not an event in 1776 but a process that has occurred every single day since.
So today I think about not just the brave Americans who fought for us in the past, but the men and women who are sacrificing today.
